  1. Heat the oven to 150 C. Layer the beef and pork chunks, onion, carrot, swede and potato into an oven dish or casserole.
  2. Tuck in the whole allspice berries and bay leaf, sprinkle with the salt and pepper and pour over just enough water to barely cover.
  3. Cover with a lid and cook in the oven for about 3 hours, until the meat is meltingly tender.
  4. Remove the bay leaf, check the seasoning and serve the hot pot in deep bowls with its own broth, traditionally with boiled potatoes or rye bread.
